Properly planned developments can provide environmental and social benefits as well as drive economic development. This is recognised in the economic policies, in the context of sustainable development being an integral part of the way increasing economic productivity and employment benefits are being delivered. More information on sustainable development and how it applies to marine planning can be found in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), the South Marine Plans and the Marine Policy Statement.
Marine planning has a role to ensure that economic opportunities are able to be realised. It can do this by considering proposals in terms of their potential to contribute to increases in employment and productivity of an area.
