Fishing and Aquaculture Policy FISH1

Within areas of fishing activity, proposals should demonstrate in order of preference:

  1. that they will not prevent fishing activities on, or access to, fishing grounds
  2. how, if there are adverse impacts on the ability to undertake fishing activities or access to fishing grounds, they will minimise them
  3. how, if the adverse impacts cannot be minimised, they will be mitigated
  4. the case for proceeding with their proposal if it is not possible to minimise or mitigate the adverse impacts

Policy considerations

  1. In identifying possible effects upon fishing activity, proponents may wish to consider consulting with the appropriate decision makers and organisations including:
    • Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities
    • Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science
    • National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations
    • New Under Ten Fishermen's Association
    • North Sea Advisory Council (formerly North Sea Regional Advisory Committee)
  2. In addition to the information on fishing activity within the map below it may be beneficial to seek further data sources and review these in consultation with the fishing industry.
  3. A proponent may wish to consider the different types of fishing activities performed within the area used by the proposal, and at what time of year. This may help to minimise and mitigate any potential impacts to the industry.
  4. Access to grounds is worthy of being considered within a proposal together with activities or development proposed on the actual grounds themselves and access to appropriate landing facilities.
  5. Proponents may wish to consider any adverse effects on shellfish and finfish harvesting within their proposals, with the East marine plan areas having some of the most important shellfish grounds in England.
