As set out in the Marine Policy Statement, submarine cables are socially and economically crucial to the UK. Submarine telecommunication cables carry over 95% of the world's international traffic including telephone, internet and data, as well as providing many services for the UK's local communities, major utilities and industries. The transatlantic cables landing in the UK carry more than 70% of Europe’s transatlantic internet traffic. Alongside this, electricity power cables will support 18 gigawatts of offshore wind farms by 2020.

Preference should be given to proposals for cable installation where the method of installation is burial. Where burial is not achievable, decisions should take account of protection measures for the cable that may be proposed by the applicant.
